Summers of Wisdom turns the summer break into the most valuable months of the year. Students join a cohort, are paired with mentors from industry and the community, and spend the summer building real projects — not doing busywork. It is where the DTC pipeline plants the habits, relationships, and skills that pay off for the rest of a young person's career.

What Students Do

  • Work on a real project from concept to finished deliverable over the summer cohort
  • Learn directly from mentors — engineers, tradespeople, founders, and community leaders
  • Earn skill badges tied to the same competency framework as the year-round programs
  • Develop the soft skills — communication, initiative, follow-through — that employers value most
  • Present final work to peers, mentors, and potential employer partners

The Mentor Model

  • Each student is matched with a mentor by interest and career direction
  • Mentors commit to regular sessions and hands-on guidance, not one-time talks
  • Elder and expert wisdom is paired with modern tools and the DTC product pipeline
  • Mentorship continues past the summer into the year-round Innovation Without Walls framework

Outcomes

  • A portfolio of real work students can show to colleges and employers
  • Verified skill badges and a persistent competency record
  • A relationship with a mentor and a place in the DTC pipeline
  • A better use of formative development years than seasonal fast-food work
